The race to the South Pole was the subject of Puffin’s Class assembly today. The race between Scott and Amundsen that ended in the triumph of Amundsen and the tragic death of Scott and his team was studied as part of our explorers topic.
We have been learning about the two leaders of the expeditions, interesting facts about Antarctica and what factor ultimately led to Amundsen becoming the first man to reach both the North and South Pole.
Below you will see some pictures from our assembly. We also have some pictures on our class door so if you missed this wonderful assembly please take a look.
Above: Amundsen in his Inuit clothing while Scott opted for layers of cotton and wool. Amundsen used dogs to pull his sledge while Scott’s sledge was pulled by the men! Amundsen took 118 Huskies to the South Pole only 11 returned to base camp. The rest died, escaped or were used for food for the other dogs!
The dog in our assembly was very well behaved, but not quite a Husky!
Above: Some of art work from the assembly showing Amundsen’s sledge being pulled by dogs and Scotts use of Snow tractors. Both the tractors broke down and we won’t tell you about the horses he took with him.
