Internet Assembly

On Tuesday the whole school took part in an Internet Assembly. We discussed all the fun things we all do using the Internet.

A lot of the children loved playing games both on the web and through consoles like XBox 360, Playstation and Wii. They also enjoyed using social networking websites such as Facebook and communicating with each other through XBox Live, Skype and Messenger. As well as using laptops/desktops to access the web many children used their mobile phones to keep in contact with each other through text-messaging and using the web on their mobile devices.

Even though the Internet is a fantastic environment to have fun, learn and communicate the children were aware that they also had to be Web Smart and understand how to be good digital citizens. As part of this we discussed what to do if they came across something that upset them or made them worried and the importance to telling a grown-up they trusted about this. We discussed the importance of keeping private information, private! Using avatars and nicknames as fun ways to keep our information private.

Meeting your friends online and having a chat is one of the many advantages of using the Internet. Meeting new people online is also a great way to have fun and learn about other people’s lives. But we thought it would be very nice tell our parents about new friends and we should always tell our parents before accepting friend requests, if our friend wants to meet us or if we have a funny feeling about what our friend is asking. It all came down to be Web Smart again and remember the golden rules of Zip It, Block It and Flag It.

We also watched a short cartoon about Mel and Kim and Super Hero Sid. All about children having fun playing an online game and learning about becoming good digital citizens.

At the end of the assembly we had a fun quiz to show how much the children already knew about the e-safety.

If parents have any questions or concerns over the safe use of the Internet at school or at home, then please speak to Mrs Evans or Mrs Gallop.
